While most of the four-legged action will centre around the $50,000 Country Championships Wild Card (1280m) at Skellatar Park on Sunday, some of the region's fastest sportsmen are preparing to contest the inaugural Footy Codes Sprint.
Not only are bragging rights up for grabs, so too is a handy financial windfall - for the club and the individual.
Lining up for the first time are Brendon Chalker (Singleton Greyhounds), Stevie Dengate (Muswellbrook Rams), Mac Shepherdson (Denman Devils), Josh Adams (Muswellbrook Cats), Callum Smith (Murrurundi Mavericks), Ethan Cridland (Muswellbrook Heelers), Nick Crackett (Scone Thoroughbreds) and Callan Cridland (Muswellbrook Eagles).
It's a terrific mix of rugby league, union, football and Aussie rules representatives, with the winner pocketing $1000 (club) and $300.
"We're really looking forward to it," Muswellbrook Race Club general manager Duane Dowell said.
"And, it's great the local sporting organisations have jumped on board, too.
"The Country Championships promotes a bit of a tribal following for each race club's horses - and I see that this will endorse the same type of following for each footy club's nominated sprinter.
"I'm sure their team mates will be on hand to cheer them on.
"But, I'll admit, it won't be easy, especially running in boots in about nine inches of grass.
"Second and third placegetters will receive $250 (club) and $150 (individual), and $200 (club) and $100 (individual) respectively.
"On top of that, all participating clubs will receive 10 general admission tickets to Muswellbrook Cup Day (Friday, March 29), as well as 20 [general admission] tickets for the Country Championships Wild Card meeting."
The Footy Codes Sprint is scheduled to take place after race five, the John Deere - PVM Country maiden Plate (1000m).
