It actually began as a NSW state government initiative in 1989 and has grown significantly, becoming a national event in 2000.
Youth Week is a chance for young people aged 12 to 25 to share their ideas, attend events, have their voices heard, showcase talents, celebrate and have fun.
While it is celebrated nationally, each state and territory holds events at slightly different times throughout the month of April.
Most state governments and local councils have provided grants to fund and assist groups of young people to organise events during Youth Week.
Some states have their own theme for the week.
In NSW, Youth Week runs from April 13 to 22, with events as varied as skate parties, sports days, movie screenings, concerts, circus skills workshops and more organised.
Victoria Youth Week will run from April 5 to 14, with over 100 youth-focused events having received funding, including health awareness, musical events, festivals, arts and gaming.
In Queensland, Youth Week will take place from April 3 to 14, and is centered around the theme, 'unlimited'.
The idea is to celebrate the boundless energy young people bring to communities and encourage them to look to the future and see limitless possibilities.
ACT will celebrate Youth Week from April 12 to 21, with a number of events to celebrate and recognise the contribution of young people.
'Participate and celebrate' is the theme of South Australia's Youth Week, which will run from April 10 to 18.
This theme is a subtle nod to the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in South Australia being acknowledged in 2019.
Events in the state will encourage a sense of civic participation and an opportunity for the voices of young people to be heard.
Meanwhile in Northern Territory, a range of Youth Week events will take place from April 8 to 18.
Youth Week in Western Australia will run from April 13 to 20.
It’s a time to discuss issues that are important to young people as well as exploring solutions to challenges faced by youth.
Last but not least, in Tasmania, Youth Week will be celebrated from April 10 to 17, with events to showcase the talents of young people and provide opportunities for young people to connect with services and activities.
To get involved, visit your local council's website to see what kinds of events are happening locally in your area and when, and support the young people within your community.
