Jay Bill Mason managed to escape from Singleton Police Station shirtless, wearing navy blue shorts with a floral print and white ankle socks.
"He has escaped from police custody; the circumstances of which we are currently investigating," Hunter Valley Police District Commander Superintendent Chad Gillies told the Singleton Argus.
"We locked down an immediate area with the assistance of PolAir but unfortunately that didn't identify his location.
"We now have a response going whereby we're chasing down as many leads as we can and we're trying to locate him."
The 26-year-old is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 195cm-200cm tall, with a thin build, short brown hair, shaved on top and longer at the back, with a 'Jim Beam' tattoo on his back, an 'RIP' tattoo on his arm, a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm, and tattoos on his chest.
"We don't have any direct information about his whereabouts but we have a group put together working through the information that we do have to locate him," he added.
"Hopefully the public will have a big part to play in giving us that information; we need that information in a timely matter so we can move quickly to get him back to custody."
If sighted, the public is urged not to approach him but to contact police.

Residents have been told to keep an eye out in Singleton as police hunt for a man who escaped their custody around 2.30pm Wednesday.
Jay Bill Mason, aged 26, is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 195cm-200cm tall, with a thin build, short brown hair, shaved on top and longer at the back, with a 'Jim Beam' tattoo on his back, an 'RIP' tattoo on his arm, a full sleeve tattoo on his left arm, and tattoos on his chest.
Mr Mason is understood to frequent Singleton Heights, police say.
He escaped from Singleton police station wanted on outstanding warrants for a breach of a parole order and revocation of intensive correction order, police have said.
He was last seen shirtless, wearing navy blue shorts with a floral print, and white ankle socks.
If sighted, the public is urged not to approach him but to contact Singleton Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
The search operation includes officers from the Hunter Valley Police District and has called in assistance from PolAir.
Police have told residents to stay away from the Queen Street, Cambridge Street and Kent Street as the search continues.
