It was another outstanding event with 28 schools and more than 500 young people participating in the various competitions and educational sessions. The highlights as always were the led steer/heifer carcase competitions along with the junior judging and paraders classes.
Local exhibitors Darryl Johnston, Gloucester River and Wingham High School took out the big carcase ribbons. Highest scoring carcase was Mr Johnson's unled champion which achieved 95.34 on the hook while the high school won the led carcase championship with their Angus entry that scored 95.15.
There was stiff competition in the carcase classes with many entries scoring above 90pts. Judging took place at the even'ts major sponsor Wingham Beef Exports.
Bringing home a large haul of ribbons and trophies was St Catherine's Catholic College, Singleton. The school's steers won three carcase classes with their entries in the led and unled sections.
Their highest scoring carcase was an Angus x Charolais/Angus steer which won the heavy middleweight championship ribbon with a score of 94.98pts going onto to be awarded reserve champion led steer carcase.
A brother to that steer was a member of the winning pair of unled carcases exhibited by the school.
St Josephs High School Aberdeen achieved their most successful results in the school's 18 years of participating in Wingham Beef Week.
Head of Science and Agriculture at St Joseph's, Ms Bright took eighteen year 10 ag students exhibiting 11 head of the 206 steers entered, 10 animals placed, with five in the midweight class and four in the heavyweight class.
Champion and Reserve Champion Midweight, Champion Heavyweight, three broad ribbons culminating in the Grand Champion Led Exhibit. The grand champion steer was a Angus/Limousin steer weighing in at 492kg liveweight.
Those entries were also successful on the hook with nine steers gaining over 91 points of a possible 100.
Both St Catherine's and St Joseph's thanked their supporters in particular the breeders of the steers Graham and Kim Clydsdale, Alan Badior, Scott Brooker, Neil Nelson, Rockwell Livestock. Col McGilchrist, the Ernst family and the Nichols family.
Wallawong Murray Grey entries from Gunnedah once again performed well in the competition both on the hoof and hook parading the reserve champion lightweight and heavyweight steers. They were awarded the lightweight champion led steer carcase.
In the unled classes their light middle weight entry went onto be the overall champion on the hoof in addition to showing the lightweight champion that scored 87.1 on the hook.
Wingham Beef Exports ran a separate MSA Competition with the winners announced at a dinner held in conjunction with Wingham Beef Week.This competition attracted 540 entries from the processors' suppliers throughout the region.
In the Manning Valley Naturally brand competition the awards were dominated by the Scrivener families from Yarrowitch - Bruce and Helen, Bonny Brooke Angus and their son and daughter-in-law Alan and Megan 'Marathon'.
Grand champion carcase with a score of 90.71 was exhibited by Alan and Megan with the reserve champion going to Bruce and Helen. Bonny Brooke Angus entries scored the highest pen of three carcases, highest pen of ten carcases, highest individual MSA index and second highest MSA index, highest combined MSA index for a pen of five carcases and highest combined MSA index for a pen of ten carcases.
Breaking up the Scrivener family's dominance was Ram Station, Dungog entries with their highest pen of 10 carcases and highest MSA marbling score and highest MSA marbling score in pen of five and 10 carcases. LDL Supplier overall compliance to WIngham Beef Export grid was Dorrigo based Onward Murray Greys.
Bonny Brooke Angus sired steers were also successful in the led and unled classes of the main competition including the reserve champion led steer carcase shown by St Catherine's.
