The supported holiday looks set to become a twice annual event for Witmore with the organisation hoping others in the community, on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), will join their clients in enjoying these special excursions.
Funding from the NDIS has,for the first time ,enabled these types of trips for people with a disability.
Last year Witmore trialled their first supported holiday with an overnight stay in Manly and following that success last month a three day two night trip to Dubbo was undertaken.
"Our clients loved that trip that included visits to Dubbo Zoo and Dubbo Gaol as well as a visit to the Wellington caves," said Rachel Baigent, programs and respite manager at Witmore.
"It provided a great break for their families and allowed our clients to enjoy some independence shopping for souvenirs and going out for dinner, it was all very exciting."
The trip involved 15 clients and five support workers.
Plans are now underway for the next trip a four day, three night cruise, from Sydney to Moreton Island and return in November.
Rachel said the attraction of the cruise was it was ideally suited for clients in wheelchairs.
"These holidays are not restricted to Witmore clients anyone locally that is on the NDIS can apply for funding and join us," she said.
"We would love to see other people come along as its widens the social circle for everyone and adds to the adventure of the holiday."
