Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash at Jerrys Plains, near Lemington Road, about 7am.
One person was trapped inside their car for more than hour, before being extricated.
The man, believed to be aged 53, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service critical care medical crew at the scene.
He was flown to Newcastle in a stable condition suffering multiple injuries.
The crash site was cleared by 8am, but motorists were advised to expect significant delays in both directions.
