The former Singleton Bulls' junior representative talent made a return to his hometown this week and it didn't take long for 33-year-old to return to the region's sporting conversation.
"I've been doing exploration drilling for a couple of years and the opportunity came where I was able to go to WA to start a new job with that," he told the Singleton Argus.
"But I was able to take two weeks off and today was my first day back in Singleton so I thought I'd have a game of bowls."
Singleton Bowling Club president Darren Tracey cast the spotlight on O'Connell's enthusiasm as the day drew to a close and has declared the club open for players of all ages looking for a game.
And when O'Connell was asked if he would make a return next Thursday?
"I might even be back this weekend to be honest," he replied.
"It has a great atmosphere."
