Gilson, known to Argus readers as the 'Superfish', has continued to put Singleton on the map in the national multi-class swimming scene (a competition for swimmers with an intellectual disability) when competing at the games held in Brisbane this week.
His final time of 5:05.15 proved enough to hold off Japan's Takuya Tsugawa (5:05.85) to claim the final spot on the podium behind Hong Kong's Lon Tin Chan (4:43.52) and fellow Australian Jack Ireland 5:01.05.
"I was very nervous and I didn't PB (personal best)," Gilson told the Singleton Argus from Brisbane.
"But I'm still proud of my efforts."
He will now compete in the 200m backstroke (Tuesday), 200m breaststroke (Wednesday) and 50m breaststroke (Thursday).
Though he was also scheduled to represent Australia in the 100m breaststroke he has since made his spot available in a selfless act to allow other teammates to qualify for the line-up.
