"Due to adverse weather conditions and deteriorating air quality, Singleton Council has made the difficult decision to cancel tonight's Christmas on John Street," the council released in a statement on social media moments ago.
"We share in the community's disappointment and apologise for any inconvenience."
General Manager Jason Linnane said hot, windy and smoky conditions were not conducive to a fun, festive and family-friendly event.
"It is disappointing to call off one of our favourite community events of the year, but our number one priority is the safety of the people attending," he said.
"The reality is that despite the terrific line up of free kids' activities, entertainment and live music, strong winds, high temperatures and smoke don't mix for an enjoyable, healthy or safe evening out.
"Add in that conditions look likely to continue to worsen and ongoing emergency situations in our local government area, and it is the most appropriate decision to call off this event."
The Upper Hunter has received 11 air quality alerts in the past 24 hours (nine in the Singleton LGA) adding to a total of 841 for 2019.
