However, there were plenty of positives to come out of the narrow five-point loss, 3.9 (27) to 3.34 (22), to the highly-regarded outfit.
Even though the Roosterettes failed to kick a point in the first and third terms, the girls responded to keep their rivals, the Dockers, scoreless in the final quarter.
And, in the end, it was just one goal difference between the two teams.
"They're a great side," Singleton coach Nadene McBride said.
"So, we'll learn from that."
Lake Macquarie got the early jump to lead 1.5 (11) to 0.0 (0).
But, the encounter tightened up in the second period, with the Dockers just ahead 2.5 (17) to 1.2 (8).
With the scoreline looking against them, at 3.9 (27) to 1.2 (8), the Roosterettes came home with a wet sail - booting the last two majors and giving their opponents a couple of headaches.
The result pushed Lake Macquarie into equal second spot, along with Singleton, with The Entrance Bateau Bay sitting atop the ladder.
The Roosterettes are due to face Wallsend-West Newcastle in round five, again at Rose Point Park.
That match is scheduled to start at noon.
