Accessibility of recreation and leisure facilities in Singleton will come under the microscope at a special free event at the Singleton Civic Centre to mark the day, which will include a Welcome to Country and a light lunch.
The highlight will be a panel discussion about the opportunities - and limitations - for people with disability to be active in the local government area, followed by a practical demonstration at Singleton Gym & Swim where people can dive into aqua aerobics, check out the gym equipment or take part in a fitness class.
"It's important we continue the conversation about the issues experienced by people with a disability, celebrate their achievements and encourage inclusion in our community," Vicki Brereton, Singleton Council's Director Organisation and Community Capacity said.
"And what better occasion to highlight the work of the Singleton & District Disability Advisory Committee and the focus we have on making facilities across our local government area available to everyone than the International Day of People with Disability?
"This year we are focusing on accessibility to recreation and leisure facilities for people of all abilities and for all the reasons exercise benefits everyone, both physically and mentally, with a view to increasing accessibility to these kinds of facilities for everyone across our local government area.
"It's fantastic that the team from the Gym & Swim has joined with us to allow everyone to actively participate in International Day of People with Disability - quite literally - and I encourage all people with disability, their families and carers to come along and join the fun."
Thousands of community organisations have celebrated IDPwD by holding events across Australia since its inception by the United Nations in 1992.
"We're really looking forward to bringing people together to mark this important day to help make positive changes to the lives of 4.4 million Australians with disability, and particularly those in Singleton," Ms Brereton said.
"We're also really pleased we can hold this event in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions and for this reason we ask everyone coming along to RSVP, as well as to help us make sure everyone who wants to can get involved in aqua aerobics or a fitness class."
The Singleton International Day of People with Disability event will be held on Thursday 3 December from 10.30am. For more information about the event visit https://www.idpwd.com.au/event/1603167132/ or to RSVP contact Jackie Bonds via email to jbonds@singleton.nsw.gov.au by November 26, 2020.
