The announcement comes at a time of increased demand for medical and allied health services across the Upper Hunter.
"Demand for our GP and allied health services has been growing over the past few months and we are thrilled to have Dr Vickers joining our team. The health and safety of our community is our priority and having an additional GP working with us will allow us to continue to provide timely, quality care for our existing and new patients," said Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation CEO, Taasha Layer.
Dr Vickers is an expert in Women's Health and Obstetrics and has lived and worked within the Singleton community for over seven years. He has worked closely with the Aboriginal community for many years and has a keen interest in mental health, and preventative health management.
Ms Layer says being able to provide an additional GP to service Aboriginal communities in both Singleton and Muswellbrook will significantly improve health and wellbeing outcomes for the local community.
"It's important for people to continue to see their GP for their regular health checks as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic and head into flu season. We know demand for our services will continue to grow and it's reassuring to know we can now offer extra GP services to support our mob in keeping well," said Ms Layer.
Dr Vickers says he is excited to be joining the Ungooroo team at a time of growth and looks forward to welcoming his current and new patients to the clinic.
"I have always had an interest in Aboriginal health and wellbeing and I'm passionate about advocating for local public health measures that have a direct impact in the local community," said Dr Vickers.
Ms Layer said Ungooroo's range of GP and allied health services are helping in the drive to close the gap between Indigenous health and the health of the broader community.
"Ungooroo is the only dedicated Aboriginal Health Service in Singleton and Muswellbrook that can offer GP and specialist services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, audiology, speech therapy, psychology, dietetics and mental health services in one place," explained Ms Layer.
Dr Vickers will be welcoming new and existing patients and will be available for appointments in the Singleton Clinic on Wednesdays and Fridays with a view to increasing in the future.
"Ungooroo health care services are bulk-billed. If you would like to make an appointment, please contact the office on 6571 5111 or email admin@ungooroo.com.au," said Ms Layer.
