The winners of the 2021 BHP Women in Resources Awards were announced on Monday, November 15 at an event hosted by the Minerals Council of Australia.

Ms Thomas, who works as the Principal of Business Performance at the BHP Mt Arthur Coal site, was awarded for "her impressive leadership, mentorship and injury management across the business, as well as strong advocacy on gender diversity and community outreach".

Ms Thomas said she was extremely proud to be recognised for the award "amongst the bright and talented women in the resources sector".

"The last 12-18 months have been challenging for me both personally and professionally, to be able to reflect on this achievement with the context of these experiences is really rewarding," Ms Thomas said.

"I am proud of myself, and I hope I have made the people around me proud too, because they have been my biggest champions."

Mt Arthur Coal General Manager Adam Lancey said Ms Thomas was an integral part of the mine's leadership team.

"She's a passionate ambassador for health, safety and productivity," Mr Lancey said.

"Most recently Phoebe has led our pandemic response in NSW which has made not only the site safer, but the community as well with vaccine clinics and rapid antigen testing rollouts.

"The last two years have provided a number of challenges and opportunities which Phoebe has navigated with style. I am super proud of this recognition for her hard work and dedication."

Tania Constable, the chief executive officer of the Minerals Council of Australia, said the winners of the 2021 awards reflected the "extraordinary breadth of talent, contribution, skill and passion of women in Australia's world-leading resources industry".

"Their inspirational stories will raise awareness of the diverse careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - as well as the trades and social sciences - that exist in the resources sector for women," Ms Constable said.

"As ambassadors and role models, they will inspire more women to enter the resources workforce."
