A local junior, Edwards played five first-grade matches for the Knights between 1991 and 1992, scoring one try.
One of the highlights of his rugby league career was when he was chosen to represent NSW Country Firsts against City at Sydney Football Stadium in 1990.
The 19-year-old scored four tries in Country's 38-26 defeat against a team that included rising stars like Brad Fittler and Geoff Toovey.
His performance in the curtain-raiser was so impressive that Country Origin coach Warren Ryan called him off the bench in the main game, won 28-26 by their City counterparts.
After leaving the Knights, Edwards spent many seasons in the Newcastle district competition, playing for Macquarie and Central Charlestown, as well as coaching West Wallsend in the second division.
He also played regularly for Newcastle All Blacks in the annual NSW Koori Knockout.
He is survived by his wife Ellen, children Jared, Matt, Hayden, Brittney and Jason and grandchildren.
His funeral is expected to be held next week.
