‘C’ grade were keen for a run after last week’s forfeit by everybody’s least favourite team Dudley, and went into the game at Broadmeadow pregnant with anticipation.
But their early enthusiasm was soon dampened when Magic opened the scoring with a run away goal.
‘C’ grade regrouped and pushed forward looking for an equalizer which soon came from the boot of well known local educator Tim Rohr, whose fiercely struck shot from long range left the Broadmeadow goalkeeper no chance.
The momentum had shifted and it was all Singleton now with the experienced Brant Jenkins (with 99 First grade games to his credit) and the indefatigable Dean McNamara pulling the strings in midfield.
Singleton’s second goal soon followed with a typical bustling run from Mark Brown allowing him to cross the ball perfectly into the path of in-form goal poacher Greg Newton.
Newton continued his recent rich vein of goal scoring form when he volleyed home the cross from short range.
The Strikers had the lead and the ascendancy.
The win never really looked in doubt after that with the cold blustery conditions sapping the life out of the game as it drew to its conclusion.
The 2-1 win keeps them well and truly in touch with the leaders and depending on other results on the night could even see them move into top spot.
The Group 2 Security ‘F’ Troop team made the trek to Rathmines without the services of mercurial midfielder Simon Mulready who was still suffering from the effects of last weeks clash with Kurri when he was cruelly scythed down in the penalty area.
But they welcomed back influential midfielder Ian Swan from injury. Swan’s night looked to be over before it began when he appeared to re-injure his quadricep whilst struggling to remove his track suit pants, but he managed to dress himself and took his place on the team sheet.
Singleton was in the game right up until the kick off.
Westlakes came out firing and the Strikers defense had no answers with the Lake siders skipping to a 3 nil lead in the first 15 minutes on the back of some poor Singleton defending.
The Strikers finally found some form and hit back with a long range speculative goal from Garry Thorley.
Half time came and went with the F Troopers realizing that the first team to score in the second half would seize the initiative.
Unfortunately, that goal came from Westlakes with an even longer range speculator leaving Singleton custodian Damian Foster no chance.
Singleton scored a late consolation goal from the spot when Garry Thorley won a penalty and he dusted himself off to calmly slot the ball home.
The 2-5 loss keeps them well and truly in touch with the wooden spoon and other results on the night will have little effect on their position on the table.
Next Friday night sees football return to Howe Park with the Group 2 Security Over 35 teams both playing at home.
F Troop get the night underway at 6:30, whilst ‘C’ Grade kick off at 8pm.
