Singleton Retired Mineworkers Association presented Mr Merrick with a cheque for $3,600 and $100 proceeds from a raffle on Friday and Mr Merrick was quick to tell the group it would be put to good use.
“We have purchased life jackets with inbuilt torches that are activated through contact with water, these devices make it safer for our members but also safer for people we are trying to assist,” Mr Merrick said.
“It means that if someone falls into the water and is knocked unconscious, the light goes on and the person will be easier to retrieve,” he said.
The remainder of the donation will be spent on training and vertical rescue equipment.
Each year the Retired Mineworkers Association organises a fund raiser to support local groups and the past six charity days has raised $26,540.
This year’s event was held at Singleton Golf Club and was an afternoon of country music, raffles and chocolate wheels.
One of the organisers of the event, David Gilmore, said he was always overwhelmed by the generosity of sponsors who were quick to support the cause, especially once they realised it was the local SES.
It has been a busy few months for local volunteers given the recent fire emergency and impacts from storms.
