The loan was approved at this week’s council meeting and councillors said they were happy to see this recommendation in the agenda. 

In January draft changes earmarked for the popular camping and fishing destination were brought before council and were approved.  

The changes were part of the 2012 master plan that outlines how to improve the facilities at Lake St Clair. 

The plan suggests the facilities at Lake St Clair be improved from the existing ‘primitive’ ones at a cost of $3.8million over seven years.

Councillor Ruth Rogers said that a caretaker’s cottage was overdue and the caretaker would be greatly helped by boom gate because they won’t have the problems of chasing funds from visitors. 

“Improving the facilities would also help when it comes to retender, making it more attractive for new management,” Cr Rogers said.  

She also  hoped that council opt for a local builder to complete the construction. 

Some of the big changes potentially coming to Lake St Clair in the future include the ambitions of cabins and a serviced tourist caravans sites. 

However before that happens an improvement in power supply to the region and better treatment of wastewater and sewerage.

Lake St Clair’s popularity is continuing to rise as shown by the recent B.A.S.S Nation Australian Tournament brought hundreds of people  to the lake for a professional tournament. 

Council currently has a 20 year lease of Lake St Clair with State Water but hope to extend that before continuing to upgrade the facility.
