The competition, launched in February, was run by the Australian Library and Information Association with more than 547 nominations received for 203 different libraries and library services across Australia.
Voting for Australia’s Favourite Library was thrown open to the public and 223,768 votes had been received online, by phone, email and text when the competition closed in April.
While there was one overall national winner, Singleton Public Library picked up the coveted NSW title alongside 14 other state, territory and sector winners.
Singleton Mayor John Martin says public support for the library had been overwhelming with thousands of votes lodged for Singleton during the competition.
“Singleton residents would be well aware of the many services and programs offered at our library - from the weekly Storytime for children through to technology sessions for seniors - and clearly these services are appreciated.
The outreach programming for our villages it seems was very highly valued,” he says.
“We are a relatively small regional community. To win the NSW title when we were competing with some much larger city and metropolitan libraries is a credit to the library team.
“I’d like to thank the community for their support and hope they continue to enjoy all that Singleton Public Library has to offer. And if you’ve never been to the library, perhaps now would be a good time to check it out.”
