The students led by their teacher Fiona Hopping have just won the Huntlee ‘Bright Ideas’ competition sponsored by the LWP Property Group owners of the Huntlee development.
For their efforts their school received a cheque for $5000.
Pleased to have won the secondary schools section of the competition Ms Hopping said the 19 students involved had really enjoyed the challenge of designing the park.
“Our design was about making sure the community became involved in the park,” she said.
“To this end we incorporated a not-for-profit cafe in our design.
“This meant all the profits from the cafe could be returned to maintain park and also upgrade the facilities over time.”
It was hoped the cafe could also employ people with disabilities, she said.
The students had also included a art wall on the two hectare site where local artists could display their works and explained how the art works could be themed each month.
Ms Hopping said their design had funky outdoor furniture.
It was the creation of the not-for profit cafe that gave the St catherine’s design the winning edge, said Huntlee project manager, Glenn Swan.
Rosary Park at Branxton won the primary school’s section of the competition.
Mr Swan said the competition had attracted a large number of entries with many bright idea emerging for Huntlee’s park.
In the open section was runner-up was Brittany Thompson from Singleton who won $4000 for her design.
