LAST Saturday the Singleton Showground was the venue for the Singleton Poultry Club’s annual show and a full house of entries provided for a very successful show. Many entries were turned away.

The success was due to the attraction of the recently refurbished pavilion and an excellent schedule of prizes donated by local businesses and fanciers. With the new and refurbished pens all birds were given the best opportunity to display themselves to the judge.
The weather was very kind with mild and sunny conditions all day. The pavilion facing east is protected from the moderate westerly wind. The large crowd of exhibitors and the general public enjoyed the conditions and were thankful that the show wasn’t on the previous Saturday, the day of the Farmers Market, which experienced gale force gusty wind and torrential rain later that afternoon.
Rare breeds of poultry were featured with the inaugural perpetual donated by The Rare Poultry Breeder’s Association. Many varieties of poultry in large fowl and bantams not regularly seen in Singleton were on exhibition.
The Champion Rare Breed was awarded to a very stylish Barnevelder hen, owned and exhibited by Robert and Leanne Bendeich from Leconfield. The judge commented on the excellent markings of the hen and congratulated them on the development of the breed. Robert and Leanne were thrilled to receive this inaugural award.
Recognised top judges, John Arnett from Coffs Harbour, who judged the Softfeather Section and Ted Vaughn from Raleigh who judged the Hardfeather Section, commented on the high standard of poultry on display. Many of these birds have won in top quality company at major shows including the 2014 Sydney Royal.
Grand Champion Bird of Show was awarded to a Large Black Australorp Cockerel, owned and exhibited by Hudson & Brown (Fred Brown). This bird was also Champion Softfeather Large Fowl. Champion Large Hardfeather Fowl went to a Large Australian Game Black Red Hen owned and exhibited by Amy Andrews from Gloucester.
Champion Hard Feather Bantam went to Stephen Bailey from Abermain with a Black Red Australian Game Cock Bird. Champion Soft Feather Bantam went to a Silver Laced Wyandotte Hen, owned and exhibited by Brendan and Jackson Lambert from Martins Creek.
Catering was ably provided by a small group of club members and a willing outside helper with an excellent barbecue. Nobody went home hungry.
