Club president David Andrews said the Singleton Soccer Club works hard at promoting the club and the code of football in local schools.
Sometimes, this takes the form of the Strikers hosting local primary school games, or providing a venue for selection trials for the small schools teams.
But the club also has a desire to improve the standard of facilities within the NNSWF Premier Competitions structure, and in doing so, provide a show case for football in our area.
These two goals have been combined by the club through a number of projects that allow the club to improve facilities at Howe Park, whilst school students receive valuable on-the-job vocational training.
The club identifies projects that would improve facilities at Howe Park in conjunction with local High School representatives.
Projects are selected on the basis of the improved the amenity they provide at Howe Park, and the learning opportunities they provide for the target class group.
For example, the Year 12 Construction class may construct seating or a concrete slab, whereas a Year 10 class participating in the School’s “Have a Go” program may undertake painting or fence repairs.
The selected project is then fully funded by the Singleton Soccer Club, and supervised by club representatives (Mark Henderson – vice president, member protection officer) as well as high school teachers.
“I would think maybe 30 students have learnt ‘real life’ work skills and completed required compulsory curricular activities during this initiative,” Mr Andrews said.
“And all users of Howe Park not just the soccer club, but cricket and the general community have benefited from the improved seating, the concrete paths, and the freshly painted look of Howe Park.”
Apart from gaining recognition amongst other NNSWF Clubs, the award also saw Singleton pick up some all important training equipment.
