The Singleton Rodeo is undoubtedly one of the best in the Hunter, and never fails to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
George puts in a lot of hard work organising competitors prior to the Singleton Show, as well as making sure everything runs smoothly on the night.
The hardest job, however, is completed on the night as he takes on the vital role of pick-up man.
Pick-up men are cowboys who work the rough stock events and manage the horses and bulls.
They also rescue bronc and bareback riders from their horses after they make a ride, and release the flank strap on horses after their work is finished.
The Mitchells Flat local has had his fair share of success in the rodeo business, gaining many accolades since he started competing as a 14-year-old.
George and competing partner Ross Turnbull celebrated one of their biggest victories in 2012 by winning the pick-up team of the year title.
He has been on the Singleton Show committee for three years now and, although he doesn’t compete in the rodeo himself, it is clear that a lot of work must be done behind the scenes to get the show going.
“I think the Singleton Rodeo is so popular because people get to watch local entrants competing on their home soil – and have the chance to cheer them on,” George said.
“People are also interested in watching the juniors compete and, of course, they come because of the thrills and spills it brings.”
Part of the success is due to the bucking stock, the great viewing areas and excellent seating at the event.
The substantial prizemoney is also something to get excited about, as well as the top quality contestants that take part every year.
The addition of well-renowned country singer Travis Collins will also be a huge hit on the night, with his first Singleton performance kicking off straight after the rodeo.
George would like to thank all the major sponsors, who “are the reason why the show is such a success every year”.
The rodeo starts at 4pm, so round up your family and head over to the Singleton Showground for an adrenaline-charged night.
