THE coal versus foal debate has long divided communities in the Upper Hunter – and this week’s decision by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) to reject the nearby Drayton South project only maintained that rage.

Facebook pages in Singleton and neighbouring Muswellbrook have been running hot.
And, in some cases, the discussions are quite heated with blame being thrown at all quarters, who opposed the mining proposal.
No-one wants to see 500 people lose their jobs; and especially those who reside in the local area.
But, accusations that the PAC is anti-mining are way off the mark. The three-man panel has no personal gain and is impartial.
Just recently, the PAC approved the Mt Arthur Coal Project.
However, in this instance, they found Anglo American’s proposal was not in the public interest.
Where this leaves the Drayton South project is anyone’s guess.
After two strikes, it doesn’t look good.
But, we need calm heads and less of the hysteria on social media.
