The small to moderate earthquake would have been felt 30 to 50 kilometres from the epicenter and measured 3.3 on the Richter’s scale.
They have ruled out blasting at surrounding coal mines as the source.
“We have spoken to representatives from the mining companies and no blasting was taking place at that time”’ the spokesperson told The Argus.
“For a quake of this size the felt radius would have been 30 to 50 kilometres but we did not have any reports from the public come in.”
“I would expect those within this radius to have felt the ground shaking beneath their feet, the walls of their house and perhaps some crockery but it would not have lasted very long.”
“The area has a long history of seismic activity, there is no need for concern as this is a natural process that occurs regularly.”
