This is the highest level of performance and indicates a mark of between 90 and 100.
In extension subjects it is known as an E4 or Notional Band 6.
At Saint Catherine’s Catholic College nine students achieved one or more Band 6 or Notional Band 6 in five courses.
With School Dux, Sean Barrett and Jade Moody, who is probably better known for her sensational performances in the pool, performing extremely well.
Jade told The Argus she had received a Band 6 in three subjects - Advanced English, Advanced Maths and PDHPE as well as a Band 5 in Biology and Religion.
She is hoping to study medicine at either Newcastle University, her first preference, or UNSW.
To achieve these outstanding results Jade had to stop swimming training in April and, depending on her university course, is not sure when she will be back in the pool.
Saint Catherine’s Catholic College, acting principal, Kristen Southwell says staff at St Catherine’s are extremely proud of the achievements of our 39 HSC students for 2014.
The school was ranked seventh on the merit list for Newcastle/Hunter schools.
“Students have been rewarded for their hard work, consistent endeavour and desire to improve,” she says.
“Student results in Drama, Music and Mathematics Extension 1 were outstanding.”
“Many other students made great improvements from their School Assessment mark to their final Examination mark, demonstrating that it is never too late to make improvements to knowledge and, therefore, final results.”
Drama student, Phoebe Green received an individual nomination for an exemplary HSC Drama performance and two groups of three students also received a group nomination.
Singleton High School’s relieving principal, Ian Skilton says he is very proud and “quite excited” with the outcome.
“We received two E4 and Six Band 6 rankings over a variety of subjects, including Music, Community and Family Studies, PDHPE, Hospitality, Senior Science and Industrial Technology – metal and multimedia,” he says.
“A high proportion of students also fell into the higher end of Band 5, ranking narrowly missing out on Band 6.”
“Sean Parish did very well in achieving a Band for Industrial Technology Metal and is on the short-list for his major project to be included in the annual road show.”
“Two of our exceptional music students, Tim Dunne and Sophie Marcheff also excelled with their Band 6 results.”
He mentioned another student, Georgia McManus, who is actually in year 11 but completed her year 12 studies in Hospitality, and obtained a Band 6 result in this subject.
Katrina Gallegos, Katie Shearer, Jonathon Williams and Emma McLachlan-Tope also achieved a Band 6 ranking in one subject.
But, Mr Skilton congratulated the entire cohort on their achievements and says they will hold a ceremony to acknowledge HSC excellence on the first Tuesday in February.
