A section of the road including Griffiths Crossing across Glendonbrook has been closed since the floods in late April.
The unsealed section of road near the causeway was closed as a matter of public safety until money was allocated by council to fund permanent repair works.
Singleton Council resolved in December last year to upgrade Mitchells Flat Road, Putty Road and Mt Royal Road if savings were found in the 2014/15 operational budget.
These savings were identified in the March quarterly budget review and approved by council at last Monday night’s ordinary meeting.
Works to seal the road and repair the causeway will begin on Tuesday and should take approximately two weeks.
Once completed, the sealed road will remain approximately four metres wide and have a load limit of 4.5 tonnes.
Council’s director of community and infrastructure services group Gary Thomson said the unsealed road and damaged causeway presented a safety concern following the recent weather events.
“While there was damage to the unsealed road and causeway from the flood event, this was exacerbated by the closure of Gresford Road, with reports of a high volume of traffic, including heavy vehicles, using Mitchells Flat Road as a detour,” he said.
“We had concerns for public safety and closed the road and causeway until such time as council could resolve to allocate funds for the permanent repairs.”
Mr Thomson said council had been made aware that some motorists using the road have been given an infringement notice for disobeying a road closed sign.
“Warning signs have been erected prior to the closed sections to allow drivers to use the alternate route,” he said.
“Any complaints or enquiries of this nature should be directed to the police.
“Council advises all drivers that Mitchells Flat Road adjacent to the causeway is closed and to use alternative routes.”
Gresford Road remains closed with the unnamed bridge sustaining significant damage during the recent floods.
