Taking to the long track meant Smith had to transition from oil to dirt tyres which he had only practiced on twice this year.
But it did not stop him qualifying for both the 65cc and 85cc final after some tight racing over two days.
The NSW Long Track Championships were held at the Barley Ranch track, Raymond Terrace, on August 1 and 2.
Essentially the difference between a dirt bike track and a long track is the shape.
A long track is an oval circuit whereas the other has various shapes and left and right-hand bends.
Although not totally satisfied with his two seconds, it puts the young champion in good stead for the upcoming Australian Long Track Championships in Tamworth.
And, if past form is anything to go by, Smith could end up with two national titles.
Until then he would like to thank his family and sponsors – Pro Moto Suspension, Port Tune Performance, Chris Watson Motorcycles and Link Internationals – for their continued support.
