NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.
The origins of the organisation can be traced back to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.
The 2016 NAIDOC theme – Songlines - The living narrative of our nation – highlights the importance of songlines to the existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Singleton NAIDOC Planning Committee will kick off the activities on Saturday, July 2 at the Singleton Civic Centre Green with a family event at 10am.
The festivities will be open with a ceremonial flag raising and be followed with live entertainment, Aboriginal site tours, barbecue, Aboriginal School Dance Group, jumping castle, funky junk markets, karaoke, free health checks, craft and painting; and an art display from local young people.
A special NAIDOC Story-time has also been scheduled from 10am on the same day to celebrate the culture and heritage for children in the Library.
NAIDOC Planning Committee chairperson Jenny Campbell says the family fun day is an opportunity to celebrate and share the Aboriginal culture with everyone.
“Singleton has a strong connection to its Aboriginal culture and background and a family fun day is a great way to share this with the whole community,” she said.
The whole community is invited to attend and to join in with the celebrations and activities on the day.
