The future stars of rugby league were in action at Cessnock Sportsground on Saturday for the AAMI Under-14/15 Country Rugby League Championship.

After preliminary matches in Wagga Wagga and Forster-Tuncurry, the best under-14 and under-15 Group sides from New South Wales and Victoria went head-to-head for the title of country champions in three divisions (Cup, Plate and Trophy).
Maitland (featuring players from Greta/Branxton, Cessnock, Morpeth and Kurri) won the under-15s Plate final over Group 11 (Dubbo and Lachlan District).
Group 11 led 10-6 at half-time, but Maitland scored three second-half tries to seal the victory (with Group 11 scoring a consolation try in the final minute).
Central Coast defeated Victoria 22-10 in the under-15s Cup final, and Group 7 (South Coast) beat Group 1 (North Coast) in the Trophy final for that age group.
Central Coast also won the under-14s Cup, defeating Group 11 36-6.
Newcastle beat Victoria 16-10 in the under-14s Plate final, while Group 21 (Upper Hunter) won the under-14s Trophy with a 14-12 victory over Group 7.
The day also featured the Ladies League Tag country championship final, which was won by the East Coast Dolphins 8-7 over Central Coast.
The footy continued with the Sydney Metropolitan Women’s competition clash between the Hunter Stars (who are based at Cessnock Sportsground) and Berkeley Vale Panthers.
