“Since the new rules came into effect, no turtles have been reported drowned in recreational crab gear.
“Feedback from local fishing tackle stores in Port Stephens has indicated the new rules have been largely embraced by the fishing community.
“DPI will be seeking further advice from the Recreational Fishing NSW Advisory Council regarding continuation of the current crab gear rules in Port Stephens.
“The new rules require recreational fishers (in Port Stephens only) to modify their witches hats so that the net lies flat on the seabed when set.
“Modified witches hats and lift nets can also only be used between sunrise and sunset.”
