So will Winx, the champion Hunter bred mare, make it two in a row or will the Godolphin owned gelding Hartnell break her winning streak.
Winx has proved a $100 million nightmare for bookmakers in her 12-race winning streak, and if the favourite makes it 13 in Saturday's Cox Plate it will be more pain for the bagmen.
The Cox Plate is a global “grand prix” of weight for age horse racing.
This $3 million Group 1 race is Australia’s second richest weight-for-age race behind the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
This year 50 per cent of the field are progeny of Darley and Coolmore Stallions.
Keeping the Coolmore/Godolphin connection running Winx is the daughter of Darley champion stallion Street Cry (dec) and she was raised and grazed at Coolmore.
Sold at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $230,000 (Coolmore Vendor) to Mr Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock.
Street Cry is Australia’s reigning Champion stallion. He is the sire of 108 Stakes winners worldwide, among them 18 G1 winners.
He has sired two of the greatest mares the world has seen in Winx and Zenyatta a US superstar who suffered her only defeat at her 20th and final start when a narrow second in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
He has a G1-winning son (Street Boss) and a G1-winning grandson (Hallowed Crown) now standing in the Hunter Valley.
Hartnell is a son of Darley’s Authorized and is owned by the Godolphin stable and trained by John O’Shea
