The day of action got underway with the U15’s side dominating their Thornton counterparts.
The 1-0 score line in favour of Singleton flattered the visitors, who had no answer to the young Striker’s superior ball movement.
The only downside was their profligacy in front of goal – Singleton could, and should, have won by 4 or 5 goals.
The U17’s put up a much improved performance from their last outing, and despite losing 1-2 on the day, there were plenty of positives to take away from the game for the Strikers.
The U19’s played out a dour encounter.
Neither side seemed to be able to string together a reasonable passage of play in a very stop/start game. In the end, a penalty awarded to, and converted by, Thornton settled the affair in favour of the visitors.
An undermanned U23’s side took to the field with a host of the 19’s backing up for a second straight game.
An end-to-end game produced plenty of chances for both sides, but it was the visitors Thornton who twice breached the Strikers defence to run out 2-0 winners.
The Striker’s First Grade team was also under strength with injuries and work commitments decimating the team that had performed so well midweek in defeating 2016 grand finalists Belmont-Swansea.
The six changes in personnel was soon apparent as the Strikers struggled to get into a rhythm.
Thornton opened the scoring in the shadows of half time after a defensive mix up, and they added a second late in the 2nd period to run out comfortable 2-0 winners.
