Mayor, Sue Moore, says the day is about showcasing the many opportunities for leisure, exercise and fun and is a chance to pay tribute to those who undertake one of the most challenging, yet rewarding roles in life – a grandparent.
“In today’s busy lifestyle, expectations on grandparents are forever expanding and our community’s Seniors Week celebration is a way to encourage people who do so much for others, to also remember to take time out for themselves,” she says.
“The day is about finding time for you, to do the things you enjoy doing and maybe pick up a new interest.”
She explains Seniors Week is all about living your life the way you want to, to keep on doing the things you want to do and finding the services that help you do just that.
Noel ‘Poppa’ Riley will also be performing on the day.
Noel says he is delighted that at 77 he is still able to perform and have people appreciate his country music style.
“I am getting on a bit but I just love it and I am going to continue to love it for as long as I possibly can,” Noel says.
And, it is people like Noel that have inspired the ‘Live It Up’ theme of the event.
“Regardless of age, you should be doing the things you love to do and we are lucky to live in a town where there is so much choice for older people, it is just about finding out what’s out there and this event is a great chance to get involved in something new,” he says.
