They still haven’t seen a kangaroo but imports, Gael Boota-Basana and Kaylen Preddie, are enjoying their move to Australia and being a part of the Singleton Strikers Football Club. The new room mates both agree the slower-paced lifestyle will allow them to fully focus on football and ultimately strengthen the young Strikers outfit so they “gel” as a team. And, hopefully make their way to a grand final appearance. At just 21, defender Preddie comes straight from the busy metropolis of London where he played for Crystal Palace in their youth side. While agile attacker 23-year-old Boota-Basana has just spent the past six months in Canada where football was not his priority. Before this he played for Luton Football Club (FC) and at a semi-professional level with Sutton Coldfield FC. Club President David Andrews says they are very pleased to have signed the pair for the season. “These signings will give head coach David Willoughby plenty of options to consider, and along with a strong core of local players, including boom youngsters Jackson Skinner, Tristan Muir and Brad Millar, the Strikers player depth is looking the best it has for years,” he says. Andrews describes Gael is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal.  “He learnt his trade with Luton FC where his speed and skill made him a standout in his junior years. A diminutive player, Gael’s touch on the ball and ability to play with his back to goal saw him travel to Germany on a futsal contract playing with Hamburg FC. A natural goal scorer, he has both speed and strength, and will play a vital role in the Strikers attacking third.” Whereas Preddie is an imposing presence in the heart of the Strikers defence. “He adds ‘steel’ to a youthful Singleton backline. Strong in the air and comfortable on the ball, he is a very technically correct player. Having served his apprenticeship at Crystal Palace FC, his pedigree is impeccable, and he is sure to be a valuable addition.” The pair are proving their worth, helping Singleton overcome old rivals West Wallsend in their first FA Cup hit out for 2017.  During last Wednesday night’s match Boota-Basana stepped up to convert a penalty and says he is looking forward to taking the team further in the competition after their historic run last season.
