The doors are closed and the lights are out but locals Steve Kebblewhite and Tina Cusick are determined to reinvigorate Singleton’s dilapidated ten-pin bowling facility.

Together they have the expertise to transform the outdated premises into an entertainment hub and are keen to introduce a range of new activities, like a DJ/Karaoke set up on weekends. They know just how much “fun” bowling can be when a centre is thriving and has dedicated staff. Steve has managed both AMF and independent centres in Sydney and Newcastle – and in doing so has turned their fortunes around. But he is not just about the entertainment, as a former state league bowler he is keen to offer coaching and establish regular leagues for all ages and ability. While Tina has a background in catering and is keen to offer an extensive cafe menu to Singleton residents. Her plans include utilising the large space which was once an indoor cricket pitch. She wants to turn it into a welcoming area for young mums. And while the concept – Singleton City Lanes - is getting plenty of likes on facebook, the enthusiastic pair need the community to provide them with some feedback. They really need to know if they are on the right track, and that people will frequent the centre.
“We really need people to let us know what they want, if they are interested in playing in a league, or booking a birthday party,” Steve says.
One local resident who has responded is hard-working volunteer, Kay Sullivan. Although she is well-known in the community for her work with the Singleton Cancer Appeal for many years now Kay, and her husband John, have been taking a group of children to the ten-bowling every Friday. Kay explains these children have special needs and look forward to the outing. “But now we have nowhere to go; there is no other suitable venue in town,” she says. Making the lanes more accessible to people with a disability would be one of the couple’s priorities but for this to happen they need to do a lot of work which will require sponsorship.
