Convictions and sticking to them do not appear to come easily to a number of our politicians as last week’s madness in Canberra clearly demonstrated.

One minute they were right behind their Prime Minister and the next they were running in the opposite direction. What a disgrace and what a mess.
In the meantime, outside the cloistered world of federal politics people, especially farmers, are having to make some tough decisions.
There is no magic potion or pill for that matter that will fix the drought only decent rainfall can do that and no one can tell definitely when it will arrive.
Perhaps the rains will come before sanity returns to Canberra – an election looms large given the state of affairs and a new government may bring with it drought breaking rains.
It did once before following the election of Bob Hawke in 1983 so maybe there is a method in their madness after all by bringing on an early election our pollies hope to break the drought.
While we wait and see what happens in Canberra and with the weather gods farmers struggling with the drought have at hand organisations to provide advice and assistance.
Making tough decisions is no easy task so we would encourage farmers to seek assistance and advice sooner rather than later.
Singleton Council have opened drought hubs at the library or Visitor Information Centre at Townhead Park where people can seek help – so please use these facilities. Come in and have a cup of tea and a chat.
There is also the Hunter Local Land Services which can assist in particular with advice on livestock.
Feeding livestock is now expensive and harder going with traditional fodder such as hay almost impossible to source.
So it might be time to sell and forget rather than feed and regret. Do not leave making that decision too late and it impacts on the animal’s welfare.
Prices for cattle although not at a peak remain reasonable for stock in good condition.
There have been some wonderful stories of people reaching out to assist others at this time including a Tasmanian farming family buying weaners from our district and when taking delivery dropping off nine round bales of donated hay.
True Aussie mateship.
