But they’re also an awesome opportunity to get those jobs done around the house that you keep putting off.
And with a little planning, maybe you can find time to do both.
With only three days to get to work (or get to relaxing, depending on your priorities) – it’s important to choose jobs that you can complete.
This gives you a sense of achievement and avoids the pain of having to work on uncompleted projects through the week.
So here is a guide to what you can achieve in a long weekend.
One hour
Strike cuttings of your new spring plants and get them into individual pots, ready to be planted out in a few months
Make a budget – You’ll be surprised at the savings you can make year to year if you have a budget written down. Don’t forget to include your home renovation costs.
One day
Get organised – Create a pinboard for your kitchen to help organise family life. Find an old photo frame or window frame from a junk shop or discount store, sand and paint it in colours to complement your kitchen. Then affix corkboard to the back of the frame with a nail gun.
Hang the family pictures – Use paper to cut out and blu-tack your frame shapes onto the walls first to ensure you like the layout before marking up the location of your holes.
Restore the family heirlooms – Sand and stain or just give them a super thorough polish to restore furniture and silver heirlooms to their former glory.
Refresh the lounge room – Go shopping for new cushions, throws and artwork and keep an eye out for some interesting vases to fill with new season flowers. This will give your room a new, fresh look.
One weekend
Create a piece of art for your home – Find yourself a large canvas and choose four of your favourite colours. Go crazy painting and layering colours to create a masterpiece to hang.
Build a veggie garden – Build up a garden bed and surround it with shallow retaining walls. Dig the trenches and fill your sunny space with nutrient rich soil. Include stakes for climbing plants and get all those fruit and veggies in for a full summer crop.
Renovate your kitchen – A long weekend may not allow you enough time to renovate a whole kitchen, but there will be time to paint kitchen doors, change up doorknobs and install new appliances.
