Last year they had one winner but in 2016 St Cath’s have two – Kalani Bates (Year 6) and Dominic O’Brien (Year 7). They have won their respective stages in the Catholic Schools Office creative writing competition.

This years theme was compassion, and the budding authors edged out students from across the Diocese of Maitland – Newcastle.
Head of English, Alana Partridge says teachers from schools around the region select the five best stories from each stage, and submit them.
“This years theme gave the children some scope for self-reflection. Interestingly, Dominic wrote his from the perspective of a homeless dog looking for a person to love him.” A unique approach that made his short story very unique and emotive, Miss Partridge says. Whereas Kalani took on the complex theme of a young girl struggling to survive in an impoverished country.
Within 500 words she managed encapsulate her plight then fast forward 20 years and describe her life after the girl had been assisted by a charity organisation.
