Singleton Roosterettes keep the flag flying in Black Diamond AFL

THE Singleton Roosters travelled to the Central Coast on Saturday, with the Black Diamond Cup outfit going down to Gosford in a six-point thriller while the women’s side proved too strong for newcomers The Entrance Bateau Bay.

In the Hunter Haval Black Diamond Cup, a five-goal third quarter from Gosford enabled them to secure a priceless win over the fast-finishing Roosters in a great game of footy at Adcock Park, 14.11.95 to 14.5.89.

The match ebbed and flowed in a thrilling last term after the Tigers led by 15 points at the final change.

And, after both teams exchanged early majors, the Roosters seemed to be in control when four consecutive goals saw them lead by seven points.

A goal to Gosford saw the scores level with four minutes remaining.

Both sides went looking for the all-important win, however with Singleton charging, an important mark deep in defence to Gosford saw the Tigers take the ball from one end to the other, which resulted in the winning goal being kicked just before the final siren sounded – much to the agony of the Roosters players and their supporters.

The match was marred by the serious injury to key Rooster Mitch Gaffney who suffered a broken jaw.

Coach Andrew Scott was standout across the whole day for Singleton with Jacob Welsh, Sam Howard, Sam Brasington and Scott Moore others to play well.

Gosford 3.3, 6.4, 11.8, 14.11 (95)

Singleton 3.1, 7.3, 9.5, 14.5 (89)

In the women’s match, the Roosterettes kept newcomers The Entrance Bateau Bay (TEBB) scoreless as they romped away with a 129-point victory.

Singleton can empathise with their opponents, having been in a similar position two years ago.

However, that seems a distant memory as the Roosterettes have started their third season with three consecutive wins.

Singleton’s best players were Bree Howard (four goals), Nadene McBride, Emily Mitchell (goals) and best on ground Natasha Pietrzac.

Singleton 7.3, 12.7, 17.10, 19.15 (129)

Next Saturday, Singleton is at its Rose Point Park headquarters, hosting Maitland in Hunter Valley derbies in the Black Diamond with both teams playing for a trophy in memory of Brian Childs, while in a quirk in the draw the Roosterettes will be again taking on the TEBB in the GE Women’s competition.
