“For long periods of time we did exceptionally well,” he explained post-match.
Newly appointed captain Hayden Nicol found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the trial match allowing his side to hold onto a 1-0 lead for a majority of the evening.
The result comes just one week after the Strikers held off Toronto 2-1 at Alroy Park.
“We lost our way at different times in both games but I’m happy with the progress and we played some good football today and some great football last week,” he added.
“We’re a work in progress and we’re working towards Toronto (again) in two weeks’ time.”
Though Mayfield play in a lower tier, it should be noted that the Strikers held their opponents to two shots on goal (including the equaliser).
The Strikers will now travel to Dudley on Thursday night for their third and final trial game.
“Mayfield proved to be the best side in the lower and our preference is to avoid playing sides that are already in our competition,” he continued.
“Mayfield was the premier for their league in 2018 and Dudley finished third but there are some good players in that competition and I thought it’d be good for their players to give us a run for our money.”
“We’re probably not as fit as we can be but we held our own.”
Earlier this afternoon, Singleton’s third grade side celebrated a 2-1 victory before the second grade side suffered a 0-2 defeat.
He added, “Dylan Bentley (who scored against Toronto last week) essentially played in all three games which was a terrific effort.”
