It was an exciting and entertaining evening as it was held in conjunction with the Thursday night squash club’s decider.
This is only the second occasion that the two organisations have combined their grand finals since the Monday night club moved from the now demolished downtown complex.
The night was a great promotion for squash, which is seeing an increase in popularity.
There is still room for more players. Both new and past are always welcome.
Further combined nights between the clubs are planned for the future.
Singleton Club’s grand final was between Team 3 and Team 5.
The opening match was Line 3 featuring Grant Farrar (3) and Marc Justen (5).
Though the ball was cold at the start, it didn’t take long to warm up with both players moving well around the court in a number of long rallies.
Justen tried hard but Farrar proved to be dominant winning the match 3/0.
Game 2 was between Line 1 players Ben Isaac (3) and Mark Williams (5).
Williams started the fixture with more determination that kept the hard-hitting Isaac in check for the first two games.
Unbelievable recovery shots by both fast-running players were most entertaining to watch.
Isaac won the third set, which saw Williams fight back in the fourth game but lose 7/9.
Isaac then went on to win the fifth and deciding rubber of the match.
Team 3 unfortunately had two of its members unavailable on the night, which saw a forfeit of Line 4 to Team 5 with Carla Merrick winning 9/0.
With the night in the balance, Farrar had to step up to play Line 2’s Andy Bainbridge to determine the champions.
Farrar played above himself but, finally through some skilful play, Bainbridge prevailed 3/1.
Team 3 - Mark Williams, Andy Bainbridge, Marc Justen and Carla Merrick were declared 2016 Autumn Comp winners.
Minor premiers were Team 1 – Paul Levick, Dan Thorn, Craig Thomas and Josh Pescud.
Line winners were Line 1 Paul Levick, Line 2 Dan Thorn, Line 3 Craig Thomas, and Line 4 Josh Pescud.
The Spring Comp starts two weeks after school resumes on Monday, August 1, with grading from 7pm on the first two weeks beginning Monday, July 18.
New players are welcome but all players need to attend grading.
