These are the words of our humble, home-grown champion, professional bull rider, Cody Hefferenan.
The straight shooter making it abundantly clear that notching up a win at the Singleton Show Bullride this Friday night is just as important as his next big gig – the PBR Newcastle Invitational on October 7.
A good result at this international event will secure the current Australian Champion a spot on the Global Cup team.
Heffernan says competing at this new million dollar event is an enticing prospect.
“The cup will see seven guys from each country fight it out to see who has the best bull riders,” he explains.
“This is my last chance to qualify; five guys have already made the team and there are only two spots left.”
After this Heffernan plans on heading back to the United States, where he once again hopes to qualify for the PBR World Finals in Las Vagas.
In the world standings he is currently ranked 47, and 5th in both the PBR Australia and Australian Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) rankings.
“I have had a few little setbacks but I am still doing okay,” he says.
“Since coming home I have competed in five rodeos and won four. I felt like I needed to do this to get come consistency back.”
And, now the fierce competitor feels like 2018 is going to be “a big one” after getting back to his roots.
Although he admits to really feeling the pressure when stepping up on home soil, and this Friday night will be no exception during the open bull ride at the Singleton Show.
“There is going to some good bulls there and I am hoping to draw Beesting. I have been on him twice and have won a fair bit of money,” Heffernan says. He is also looking forward to watching his three nephews compete.
“Sonny and Benji are entered in the U8’s calf ride and Lane is going in a new event called the mini-bulls,” the proud uncle says.
The 2017 Glencore Singleton Show Bullride kicks off at 6.30pm with live entertainment by Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont.
