And, the success of Austen Tayshus’ “live” show could herald in a new form of entertainment in town for many years to come, according to manager Rhiannon Manning.
“It’s the first time we’ve done this,” she said.
“It is also an opportunity to diversify what we can offer to locals.
“We have the facility, the stage and the sound system.
“It provides an intimate setting for comedians, too.
“An act like this is certainly something we’d look at doing again.”
The 30th anniversary national Australiana tour lands in Singleton on Friday, February 2.
The spoken word piece that contains many puns using Australian terms, especially places and animals, was written by fellow comedian Billy Birmingham – but made Austen Tayshus, an aptronym based on the word “ostentatious”, a household name.
“Australiana has a very big appeal, even to this day,” Miss Manning said.
“Everyone’s heard a line or two from it.
“I think it will be a good night – and open up Majestic Cinemas to a whole new audience.
“Tickets are only $25, which is reasonably priced.”
There are few comics in the world with the tenacity and killer instinct of Austen Tayshus.
He has the ability to take a room hostage, just with his tongue.
Every show is unique.
He weaves current politics, what’s happening in the room, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, semantics, religion and, of course, sport – and let’s not forget the Pope into the one gag.
There is no subject he won’t dissect.
In 1983, Austen Tayshus released Australiana, which is still, three decades later, the highest selling single in Australian recording history.
He wrote and starred in the film, Intolerance, which received the Best Film Award at the 1998 Tropicana Film Festival and for which he won Best Actor.
Austen Tayshus is also a graduate of the Film and Television School (1978).
He wrote and directed the following films, Eric and Alice (1975), Waves (1976) and The End (1977).
