With over $3500 worth of prizes on offer, the event has again attracted players from all over the region as well as healthy contingent of local juniors.
Glencore’s community relations manager Craig Strudwick says supporting regional events at a junior level is an important part of the program.
“It is not just about purchasing equipment,” he says.
“Sometimes it is the small grants that make the biggest difference.”
After working hard to stage the inaugural event last year, junior committee members Mel Vesper and Jo Evans are appreciative of the sponsorship as it the attractive prize pool that draws players from around the region and allows them to stage such a “professional tournament”.
Jo says they set up a staging area with a microphone and call the competitors up when it is time to tee off.
Adding to the atmosphere is the support they receive from the members.
Mel says they not only rendered their assistance on the day but about 20 of our members formed a gallery to cheer the juniors on.
“We are very lucky,” she says.
The open is on this Sunday, August 12 and entries are still being accepted for both the 9 and 18 hole competitions.
Entry is only $20 and includes a barbecue lunch.
