Traffic along George Street and the highway north and south of town was at a standstill during the morning peak. The $30 million project is reaching its most spectacular stage with the lifting into place of the new rail bridge over the New England Highway just north of White Avenue providing a minimum 5.4 metre vertical clearance.
To enable the removal of the existing bridge and the placement of the new bridge the main Northern Railway line was cut providing a break in coal train movements along this section of the track.
Also included in the upgrade is the rebuilding and widening about 260 metres of the New England Highway to provide two 3.5 metre lanes.
The upgrade is jointly funded by Australian Rail Track Corporation and the NSW Government with Daracon Group delivering the upgrade.
Work is progressing on the New England Highway south of Singleton at its intersection with Racecourse Lane. This upgrade provides a northbound overtaking lane south of Racecourse Lane and line marking changes to provide a wider central median plus a U-turn bay on the northern side of old Range Road, to provide access to the highway for adjoining properties.
