The beds are a part of Hunter New England Health’s bed replacement program and in total 900 electric beds will be distributed throughout the region.
The program will see Singleton receive six beds including one bariatric (increased weight bearing) bed worth more than $16,000.
Nursing Unit Manager medical/emergency stream Jennifer Skilton says the electronically operated beds mean less manual handling for nursing staff.
“With the touch of a button the beds can be lowered much closer to the ground making it easier for patients to get in and out of the bed,” she said.
“They can also be raised at the bottom not just at the top so a patient’s legs can be elevated.”
This has been a bonus for current patient, Audrey Almond who has a nasty infection in her lower leg.
“Raising the bottom of the bed has really helped get my leg into a comfortable position,’ Mrs Almond said.
“I have been in the older beds and these are indeed much better. They really are nice and comfortable.”
Ms Skilton said the old beds were collected during the week and will not be wasted.
“They are being packed off and sent overseas,” she said.
Thanks to Rotary the beds are being sent to the Milne Bay and Alotua Districts in New Guinea to be used in hospitals and clinics.
