Mr Healey spent a quarter of a century working in open cut and underground operations before joining the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as a senior inspector in 1998.
The past six years, he steered the helm at Mines Rescue and Regulation and Compliance for Coal Services.
Mr Mason built gas detectors and analysed underground samples with the Coal Mines Technical Services (CMTS) team for more than three decades.
Today, he is considered one of the world’s leading experts on underground gases and spontaneous combustion.
Throughout their careers, both men made significant contributions to the mining industry.
They have advised on multiple mine emergencies including Pike River and Blakefield.
They’ve also proactively improved industry safety with continuous initiatives, training and mentoring programs and world-class technical reference material.
Their legacy is helping achieve an unprecedented level of safety for workers and for the industry.
“At the end of the journey, it is satisfying to look back with pride on being part of a team that has made a difference,” Mr Healey said in reflecting on his retirement.
“The NSW coal industry is safer and better protected as a result of the prevention, preparation and mitigation provided by Coal Services.
“I have made some friends but, more importantly, met some committed people who really care about doing more than just a job.”
In their places, Coal Services welcomes Matthew Fellowes as general manager Mines Rescue and Regulation and Compliance, and Brian Howell as the CMTS manager.
“Mines Rescue and Regulation and Compliance are essential functions within our industry,” Mr Fellowes said.
“Our proactive safety training helps minimise the risk of an incident and, if an emergency does occur, our team are trained and ready to respond immediately.
“I am looking forward to working closely with our customers to protect our mine workers; and to maintain and improve our status as world leaders in the coal mining industry.”
