Despite some initial hesitation when it came to entering the Australian Taxation Office competition, Saint Catherine’s Catholic College duo, Jordan Donohue and Cabe Barrett, have been named as joint winners.
The duo and their teacher, Catherine McBurney, travelled to Canberra last week where the Commissioner of Taxation, Chris Jordan, awarded all the prizes.
The Tax, Super and You competition invited students in years 7–10 to think outside the box and develop creative ideas on how they think tax and/or super contributes to the community.
So Ms Burney encouraged her Year 9 commerce class to think outside the box and come up with some creative concepts.
Assistant Commissioner Sally Bektas said an encouraging amount of high-quality entries were submitted to the competition from across the country.
“We received so many creative entries that exceeded our exceptations, so when it came down to the wire it was a very tough decision for us all to decide on the winners,” Ms Bektas said.
“The top 10 shortlisted entrants presented their ideas to us via a webinar. We were then able to determine two first prize winners, and three second prize winners.”
“The entrants showed such creativity in how they explained tax and super. We know how difficult it can be to present these complex topics in interesting ways, the students did such fantastic job.”
Taylah Knight, Emily Wilkinson, Jasmine Klienman and Brooke Merrick were also shortlisted in the competition which is quite an accomplishment considering it was a national competition.
