On a day when only 12 majors were kicked due to excellent defence and profligate shooting (the two teams combined for 12.24 across four quarters), the Roosters led by two at quarter-time but could not manage another goal until the final term, when the game was well and truly over.
With Killarney Vale leading by 28 points, coach Andrew Scott wrung the changes, switching Sam Brasington into the ruck in a bid to thwart league ruckman Tim Oosterhoff, moving himself to centre-half forward and moving Daine Cowburn to the wing in a bid to kick some goals.
Brasington did well on the ball, Scott made some difference in the forward line and Cowburn showed he can be effective at both ends of the ground as he kicked a major.
But, it proved too little, too late for the Roosters as they switched positions with Bombers on the ladder due to Killarney Vale’s vastly-superior percentage.
Of concern for Scott and the Singleton hierarchy will be a big injury toll, with Brenton Potter (ribs), Andrew MacPherson (hamstring) and David Hicks (facial injury) all hurt on a tough day at Rose Point Park.
Cody Carroll, their most effective forward, was the Roosters only multiple goalkicker with two.
Singleton’s best players were Brasington, Carroll, Scott, Richard Wilkes, Ben Graham and Cowburn.
Jarryd Ingram played his 100th senior game for the Roosters in a rare highlight for the local faithful.
Killarney Vale 1.4, 3.8, 6.11, 8.13 (61)
Singleton 2.0, 2.5, 2.7, 4.11 (35)
Goals: Cody Carroll 2, Daine Cowburn 1, Alex Mitchell 1
Best: Sam Brasington, Cody Carroll, Andrew Scott, Richard Wilkes, Ben Graham, Daine Cowburn
In the GE Women’s Competition on Saturday, Singleton proved no match for a very confident and composed Killarney Vale Bombers outfit, going down by 74 points, 10.15.75 to 0.1.1.
Tahlia Thompson was simply outstanding in the last line of defence for the Roosterettes, with the Bombers spending at least four-fifths of the game camped inside the Singleton defensive 50m arc.
Lua Roser had a great one-on-one battle with star Bombers follower Skye Bailey, with Roser coming up with several effective tackles on Bailey and picking up possessions constantly over four quarters.
Renee Deitz was also excellent across half-back, with Emily Mitchell Singleton’s only effective forward on a day where the Roosterettes defence did very well to keep the Bombers to just 10 goals.
Killarney Vale 3.3, 5.7, 7.12, 10.15 (75)
Singleton 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.1 (1)
Best: Tahlia Thompson, Lua Roser, Hayley Richards, Renee Dietz, Neisha Smith, Emily Mitchell
Next weekend the Roosters are on the road with the Black Diamond Cup team travelling to the Central Coast to take on Wyong Lakes while the women head to league headquarters to play Newcastle City Novas.
