The main aim of the initiative is to enable parents/carers to be able to take a break and, at the same time, allow children and adults living with a disability to be able to learn to be independent out of the family home.
“It’s a service Singleton really lacked and needed in the community,” organiser Rachel Baigent said.
Participants will learn to live independently and gain skills such as cooking, cleaning, washing and gardening in the respite house alongside fellow mates and staff.
The house can accommodate up to three clients at a time and will be open seven days a week.
“We have some families who have never taken a holiday or had a break from caring for their dependents,” Ms Baigent said.
“So, this will be a great way for some families to take some well-needed time away or off and gives our clients an opportunity for self growth and develop in a safe, sociable, short term accommodation facility.”
Out-of-town clients who usually don’t have access to transport to weekend events in Singleton will now be able to spend the weekends at the respite house and be able to engage with other people.
The modern duplex features four bedrooms, a large open planned living area, dining and kitchen area and a private, spacious backyard.
Two participants Shaun Summers and Tyson Upward are the first to move in early next week and are excited to be living independently.
“I live in Kurri and have to travel three times a week in and out of Singleton,” Mr Summers said.
“So, living here as my home away from home for half of the week will definitely help me and take some stress off my family.”
People can book their spot today by contacting Witmore on 6572 2578 and asking for either Rachel Baigent or Alex Rogers (NDIS Coordinator).
Alternatively they can email through to admin@witmore.org.au
“We are all really excited about it and we now have it available for anyone who is keen or eager,” Ms Baigent said.
